My mother started using meth as I was beginning junior high. At first I was in denial. I didn't believe she could possibly be doing it. But the signs were there. My brother and I didnšt see her much. She was always downstairs with different people doing meth. She called the basement her dungeon. I became the parent to my then six year old brother. Everyday he was fed and made it to school.
I remember the day she got caught like it was yesterday. There were three knocks on the door and it was the police. I answered and they asked if my mother was home. I said yes and went downstairs to tell her. I remember the look on everyonešs face that they had indeed been caught. I wailed out the door and around every corner stood more and more police officers. Luckily my brother was at my grandmašs and wasnšt subjected to that experience. I left on my bike as fast as possible, crying.
My mom spent 48 days in jail and was put on probation. We were very lucky to have not been taken away from her. She hasn't touched meth since that day. She has been clean now for a couple months short of five years. Even today she is completely grateful for getting caught when she did.
I'm proud of everything my mom has accomplished and we have never been closer.
